Tiny little midges are small flying insects that belong to the Chironomidae family. They are often mistaken for mosquitoes due to their similar appearance, but midges do not bite or transmit diseases to humans. These insects are commonly found near bodies of water, such as lakes, ponds, and streams, where their larvae develop. Despite their harmless nature, midges can be a nuisance in large swarms, especially during their mating season. **

Horses often use their tails to swat at midges and other flying insects to keep them away. They may also roll in the dirt or mud to create a protective layer against the insects. Some horses may seek out shady areas or use their herd mates to help protect each other from midges by standing close together. Additionally, horse owners may use fly sprays or other insect repellents to help keep midges at bay. **

The correct name for midges or similar insects is "Chironomidae." These insects are commonly referred to as midges, but their scientific family name is Chironomidae. They are small, non-biting insects that are often found near bodies of water and are an important part of aquatic ecosystems. **

However, it is important to ensure that the insects your dog is consuming are not carrying any harmful pesticides or diseases. If you are concerned about your dog consuming insects, you can try to limit their access to areas where these insects are prevalent, or consult with your veterinarian for advice. **
